How to sew in a zip into your knitting - Step 1

In this video, we will teach you how to attach a zip into your knitwear. To attach your zip you will need a zip, a piece of knitting, a sharp sewing needle, and some strong sewing thread.

Thread your sharp sewing needle with some thread. We are using a contrasting thread to make it clear to you but you should try and use thread a similar colour to your knitwear or the zip to keep it looking nice and neat and make it harder to spot the sewing thread.

You will start sewing your zipper onto your piece knitting 3 stitches from the edge. Line up your zip so that the 3rd row from the edge is touching the teeth of the zip. We will start with the ribbed section of our knit piece.

Insert sewing needle from back to from through your zip.

Take your sewing needle underneath the purl bump on your knit piece, which will be the 3rd stitch from the edge of your knitting.

Now tie a knot so that your sewing thread will be secure.

Take your sewing thread back to the reverse side of your zip a couple of millimeters above where you made your initial stitch, pull it tight.

Now take your sewing needle back to the front of your zipper tape a couple of millimeters above and level with where the next purl bump is.

Then take your sewing needle underneath the next purl bump. So your sewing stitch should take in a knitted stitch each time it comes through to the front.

Repeat steps 8-10 until you have finished attaching your zip the ribbed section of your knitwear, remember that you’re working with the 3rd stitch from the edge.

To attach the zip to stocking stitch, you will repeat the same process as before but unlike the ribbed section, we do not have purl bumps here. Find the bar that sits within the 3rd stitch from the edge and go underneath it instead.

You will keep repeating these steps until your knitted piece is fully attaches to the zip.
