This pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus an extra 2 edge stitches. The stockinette ladder stitch is made up of 2 rows which are repeated throughout.

To work the first row pattern, knit the edge stitch.

Make a left leaning decrease.

Next, make 2 yarn overs. These are made by bringing the yarn to the front of the work between the two needles then over the right needle, do this twice. This creates 2 new loops on the right hand needle.

Make a right leaning decrease.

Repeat these 4 stitches to the end of row: 1 left leaning decrease, 2 yarn overs, and 1 right leaning decrease.

When you have 1 stitch left on row, knit this stitch.

To work the second row, first purl the edge stitch.

Purl the next stitch.

Now you will meet your two yarn overs, purl the first yarn over and then knit the second yarn over.

Purl your next stitch.

Repeat these 4 stitches to end of row: purl 1 stitch, purl first yarn over, knit second yarn over, purl 1 stitch.

When you have 1 stitch left on row, purl this stitch.

Continue repeating rows 1 and 2 until you have reached your desired length.
