Round 1: To begin, make a slip knot with your 1st colour, pop the slip knot onto your crochet hook and make 4 chain stitches. Join your chain in a ring by making a slip stitch into the first chain stitch.

Round 2: Make 2 chain stitches (this is your turning chain and counts as 1 half double crochet stitch), now work 11 half double crochet stitches into the ring. To work a half double crochet stitch wrap the yarn around the hook once, then insert it into the ring and pull through a loop. Wrap the yarn around the hook again, and pull it through all 3 loops on your hook. Join your round with a slip stitch into the 2nd chain stitch. Cut your yarn and pull on the loop on your hook until the end pops through.

Round 3: With your 2nd colour, pull your yarn through any stitch of your round, and make 5 chain stitches (this is your turning chain and counts as 1 treble crochet stitch, plus 1 chain stitch). Work a treble crochet stitch into the next stitch, then make a chain stitch. To work a treble crochet stitch; wrap the yarn around the hook twice, then insert the hook into the stitch and pull through a loop. Wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull through the next 2 loops on the hook, then wrap it around the hook one more time and pull the yarn through the last 2 loops. Repeat these 2 stitches until you reach the end of the round. Make a slip stitch into the 4th chain stitch to join your round. Cut your yarn and pull on the loop on your hook until the end pops through.

Round 4: With your 3rd colour, join your yarn to any chain space by pulling a loop through the chain space. Make 2 chain stitches (this is your turning chain and counts as 1 half double crochet stitch), then work 3 half double crochet stitches into the same chain space as the 2 chain stitches. Work 4 half double crochet stitches into each chain space until you reach the end of the round. Make a slip stitch into the 2nd chain stitch to join the round. Cut your yarn and pull on the loop on your hook until the end pops through.

Round 5: With your 1st colour, pull a loop through any stitch. Make 1 chain stitch (this is your turning chain and does not count as a stitch.) Work 1 single crochet stitch into each stitch of the round. Make a slip stitch into the top of the 1st stitch to join the round.

Round 6: Make a chain stitch (this is your turning chain and does not count as a stitch). Make a further 2 chain stitches, skip 2 stitches and work a single crochet stitch into the next stitch. Repeat the 2 chain stitches, 2 skipped stitches and single crochet stitch until you reach the end of the round. Make a slip stitch into the first chain space to join the round. Cut your yarn and pull on the loop on your hook until the end pops through.

Round 7: With your 2nd colour, pull a loop through any chain space and make 4 chain stitches (this is your turning chain and counts as 1 treble crochet stitch). Work a further 2 treble crochet stitches into the same chain space, then make a chain stitch. Then work 3 half double crochet stitches into the next chain space and make 1 chain stitch. Work 3 half double crochet stitches and a chain stitch into each of the next 2 chain spaces. Work 3 treble crochet stitches, 4 chain stitches and a further 3 treble crochet stitches into the next chain space to create the first corner. Work 3 half double crochet stitches and a chain stitch into each of the next 3 chain spaces.

Round 8: With your 3rd colour, pull a loop through one of the corner chain spaces and make 4 chain stitches (this is your turning chain and counts as 1 treble crochet stitch). Work 2 treble crochet stitches into the same chain space, make a chain stitch. Work 3 half double crochet stitches into the next chain space, then make a chain stitch. Work 3 half double crochet stitches and a chain stitch into each chain space until you reach the next corner chain space. Work 3 treble crochet stitches, 3 chain stitches and 3 treble crochet stitches into the corner chain space. Work 3 half double crochet stitches and a chain stitch into each chain space until you reach the next corner chain space.

Round 9: With your 1st colour, pull a loop through one of the corner chain spaces and make 1 chain stitch (this is your turning chain and doesn’t count as a stitch). Work 5 single crochet stitches into the corner chain space. Work a single crochet stitch into each of the next 2 stitches, then work 2 single crochet stitches into the chain space. Repeat this sequence of working 2 single crochet stitches and working another 2 single crochet stitches into the next chain space until you reach the 2 stitches before the next corner space. Work a single crochet stitch into each of the next 2 stitches and work 6 single crochet stitches into the corner chain space. Continue working 2 single crochet stitches and working another 2 single crochet stitches into the next chain space until you reach the 2 stitches before the next corner space.

Round 9 Continued: Continue working as in step 11 until you reach the last 2 stitches before the last corner space. Work a single crochet stitch into each of the next 2 stitches, make a slip stitch into the 1st stitch of the round to join the round. Cut your yarn and pull on the loop on your hook until the end pops through.
