Step by Step

How to knit: Intarsia - step 1

Step 1

Intarsia allows you to create big blocks, vertical lines, and patterns. It allows you to create really seperate blocks of colour.

You will need to work with multiple balls of yarn, don’t worry it is common for them to be tangled up.

How to knit: Intarsia - step 3

Step 3

Start by casting on, we will make little colour blocks of 3 to 4 stitches. Here is the first block.

Step 4

Change to the second colour by making a slip knot and placing that on your needle. Continue casting on to finish your second colour, for the moment everything is separate so we will twist the yarns together when we make the next row.

Continue casting on your blocks of colour until you have 4 seperate blocks of colour.

Step 6

Knit as normal with your first block of colour until you reach your second colour.

Put the needle in at the back of your second colour.

We must knit with our second colour, but to be sure the first colour stays together we will twist our 2 yarns together and continue knitting as normal.

This allows you to attach the two colour blocks at the back.

When you reach your next colour block, repeat that same process of twisting the yarns together to attach your pieces together.

Continue working your piece, twisting your yarns together each time you reach a new colour block. Don’t worry if you yarns gets twisted, it’s expected!
