This technique is worked over a multiple of 3 stitches and is worked over a 12 row pattern repeat. For this swatch, we have cast on 30 stitches.

To begin pattern row 1, purl 1 stitch. Slip second stitch purl wise onto cable needle.

Hold this cable needle at the front of your work and take your yarn behind the stitch and purl the next stitch from the left needle. Take your yarn to the back of your work.

Slip the stitch from the cable needle purl wise onto the right needle

Purl the next stitch.

Repeat the last 3 stitches again: slip needle purl wise onto the cable needle, purl the next stitch, take the yarn to the back of the work and slip the stitch from the cable needle onto the right hand needle, then purl the next stitch. Continue repeating those 3 stitches until you have 2 stitches left of your row, then purl the last 2 stitches

Now let’s work pattern row 2, first knit 3 stitches. Purl the next stitch. Knit 2 stitches. Repeat these 3 stitches to end of row: purl 1, knit 2 stitches.

To start pattern row 3, purl the first 2 stitches. Slip your next stitch purl wise onto your cable needle, holding it in front of your work. Purl the next stitch from the left needle. With the yarn at the back of your work, slip the stitch from the cable needle onto the right hand needle. Purl the next stitch. Repeat these last 3 stitches until you have 1 stitch left, then purl the last stitch.

To start pattern row 4, knit 2 stitches. Purl the next stitch, then knit 2 stitches. Repeat these 3 stitches until you have 1 stitch left. Knit the last stitch.

Pattern row 5 is similar to pattern row 1 and 3, start by purling 3 stitches. Slip the next stitch onto the cable needle as before. Purl the next stitch. With the yarn at the back of your work, slip the stitch from the cable needle onto the right hand needle. Purl the next stitch. Repeat these last 3 stitches until the end of the row.

Pattern row 6 is similar to pattern row 2 and 4. Knit the first stitch. Purl 1 stitch then knit 2 stitches. Repeat these 3 stitches until you have 2 stitches left. Knit the last 2 stitches.

Here you can see your diagonal lines coming through. Your next 6 rows will be worked back towards the right.

To begin pattern row 7, purl the first 3 stitches. Slip the next stitch purl wise onto the cable needle, and hold it to the back of the work, and slip the next stitch purl wise onto the right needle, then purl the stitch from the cable needle, then purl the next stitch. Repeat these 3 stitches until there is 1 stitch left of the row. Purl the last stitch of the row.

Pattern row 8 is the same as pattern row 4.

To start pattern row 9, purl the first 2 stitches. Slip the next stitch purl wise onto the cable needle, and hold it to the back of the work, and slip the next stitch purl wise onto the right needle, then purl the stitch from the cable needle, then purl the next stitch. Repeat these 3 stitches until there is 1 stitch left of the row. Purl the last stitch of the row.

Pattern row 10 is the same as pattern row 2.

Pattern row 11 is our last cable row. Purl the first stitch. Repeat these 3 stitches until there are 2 stitches left: Slip the next stitch purl wise onto the cable needle, and hold it to the back of the work, and slip the next stitch purl wise onto the right needle, then purl the stitch from the cable needle, then purl the next stitch. Purl the last 2 stitches.

To work pattern row 12, knit the first 4 stitches. Purl the next stitch and knit 2 stitches. Repeat these 3 stitches until there are 2 stitches left. Purl 1 stitch and knit the last stitch.

Repeat these 12 rows to carry on making your travelling slip stitch!
